This course is designed to help students to familiarize themselves with the skills and strategies of film translation (from English into Chinese). Students will understand the definition, formats, principles and limitations of film translation. They will also learn how to make cultural adjustments in order to connect to local audience. Each week students will translate a part of dialogue or proofread the translation as their assignments, and then the instructor will revise their assignments. In the next week we will discuss the translation and revision in class, and students will give their opinions to their classmates. Through individual practice and group collaboration, students will have hands-on experience and reinforce their subtitle translation abilities. Thus, hopefully the results of this course will fit in with the expectations and needs in industry.
電影字幕翻譯有實際的市場需求，戲院上映外國電影，都要翻譯成中文字幕，所以影片素材來齊的第一件事就是找字幕譯者，等到中文譯稿完成才能進行其他後續作業，因此優秀的電影字幕譯者是電影發行界的重要需求，學生練就此項技能將可從事相關工作。
電影翻譯需具備良好的英文理解能力、中文表達能力及劇情解讀能力，還有時間和空間的限制，這些技能需要長時間培養。對電影翻譯有興趣的同學，即使在所有課程結束後，仍該持續多看電影，多做翻譯練習。
本課程的授課教師專職從事電影字幕翻譯工作十餘年，翻過幾百部院線電影。這門課會以有系統的編排和練習，透過老師講解、翻譯習作、譯文修改、課堂討論、佳譯評比等方式，傳授給學生電影字幕翻譯的實務技巧。 |

課程目標 |
This course aims to help students cultivate the following knowledge and capabilities:
1. to understand the formats and principles of film translation.
2. to develop effective skills and strategies of film translation through professional practice of subtitled audiovisual materials, and also be equipped with proofreading proficiency.
3. to learn how to break and combine the lines, how to determine what information to include or omit, and how to change the original meaning in different cultures to localized expression.
4. to apply different translation methods and styles to various genres.
5. to be familiar with the market and status of audiovisual translation.
6. to have some critical thinking about film translation through presentation and discussion of related journal articles or theses.
Notes about Film Translation
1. 有特定的翻譯格式和技巧，與只有文字的書面翻譯不同。
2. 每一行字幕有字數限制，要用最簡潔適切的中文來表達。
3. 字幕譯文要配合畫面和聲音的調性和速度。
4. 對白要簡潔口語，避免文縐縐或咬文嚼字。
5. 用字要符合各角色的性別、年紀、背景和個性，才能翻得傳神。
6. 有時不需完全譯出字幕文本（包括對白、自白、旁白）裡的每個字，因為有些意義已由畫面、聲音等感官方式傳達，而遇到文意模糊時，往往也可從影像、語氣、音效中解讀出意義。
7. 影片文本的訊息需透過各種符號模式傳達，非語言的符號如畫面、聲音、配樂、音效等，其本身即具有意義，所以翻譯時要整合所有模式，盡可能完整傳達出文本的意義。
8. 翻譯能力訓練的一大訣竅，就是多參考各家翻譯，課堂上透過與其他同學互評譯文和佳譯比較，可觀察到不同的詮釋角度和翻譯風格。

課程要求 |
1. You will have approximately a dozen of weekly assignments, one individual presentation & term paper and one feedback report during this semester.
2. Three films will be selected. Students will watch the films, and practice translating and proofreading the subtitles at home.
3. Students are expected to be active in the class and group discussion, to share your ideas and to offer suggestions to others.
4. Late submission of an assignment will receive a reduction in grade. Students who miss more than one-fifth of total course hours without an adequate reason will result in your failing this course.
＊ 每週作業分成兩部分，主要部分是小組作業，另一部分是下週報告者會提出三個問題，請每位同學務必事先思考和作答。
每週小組作業的基本流程：
1. 兩人一組。
2. 每週指定回家作業的英文對白範圍。
3. 課後每組的一位同學依指定範圍進行「小組翻譯」（中英對照），週四中午前傳給同組的搭檔。
4. 搭檔收到小組翻譯後進行校對，於週五午夜前傳給老師。請註明組員名單，並cc同組搭檔。
5. 老師會在週末時回傳給各組老師修改後的建議版。
6. 同學各自下載老師回傳的建議版，上課時直接帶筆電至教室（若沒有筆電則印出來）。老師會講評各組的翻譯和校對版本，並請每位同學針對其中一組（每週輪替不同一組）的譯文提出至少一個具體建議或想法。接著會觀看該電影片段的院線正式版中文字幕。課後各組需討論確定每句對白的「最優翻譯終極版」，同時選出5句佳譯。
7. 各組把「最優翻譯終極版」（中英對照，並用黃色的醒目提示標出5句佳譯）傳給老師（於週五午夜前與該週的作業一起交）。老師會整理好各組的「最優翻譯終極版」，連同電影上映時的字幕寄給所有同學參考。請同學務必撥空讀一遍，將有助於瞭解自己的問題所在。
Individual Presentation
個人報告：有三個方向如下，擇一進行，若不確定方向是否合適，可先跟老師討論。請儘快確定題目，若有電子檔的參考資料，請寄一份給老師。要完成的任務分為：（1）報告前，將三個問題（或是三題翻譯練習，也可以是課堂上帶活動如快問快答或分組競賽），於報告前一週的週六午夜前寄給全班和老師；（2）課堂簡報，做成PPT，報告約30分鐘，另有20分鐘給同學發問和探討問題；以及（3）報告後，上傳簡報檔到雲端共享資料夾（老師會提供網址），供全班和老師下載和參考。
→第一個方向：探討「台灣電影／電視字幕翻譯產業」相關議題，電影方面以院線片和影展為主，電視方面以台灣可收看的有線台和串流平台為主，可談產業的各個面向，例如現況、歷史、進展、需求分析、問題和建議、瓶頸和對策、片商／電視字幕公司變化、影片數量變化、翻譯稿費變化、譯者數量變化、譯者背景、片商／電視字幕公司與譯者的關係等）。請介紹參考資料，並提出自己的觀點。
→第二個方向：評介「機器翻譯＋譯後編修」的作業方式，或是介紹和比較重要的電腦輔助翻譯軟體（CAT），並思考AI輔助工具對字幕翻譯的幫助（或是目前幫助不大）及理由為何。請介紹參考資料，並提出自己的觀點。
→第三個方向：探討「電玩翻譯產業」相關議題，可與「字幕翻譯產業」的屬性和市場比較，也可單獨介紹該產業及其展望。由於大環境改變，居家娛樂發酵，家庭影視和電玩產業的後勢看漲，此議題的討論可讓未來有志從事相關行業的同學更有概念。請介紹參考資料，並提出自己的觀點。
Final Assignment
期末作業：完整翻完一部電影（本學期三部指定電影的第一部），直接打在WORD腳本檔上（老師會提供檔案），整部片都要遵循字幕翻譯格式需知。翻完一整部電影，會有助於瞭解專業譯者的工作份量和作業流程，也能測試自己的速度和品質的穩定度。請於最後一週（第16週）的週日午夜前，傳電子檔給老師。
Feedback Report
心得報告：書寫約1000字的學習心得（中英文皆可），包括本課程帶來的個人收穫和進步；本課程遇到的問題，最後是否有改善；是否還想加強或學到哪方面的影視翻譯技能；對於本課程的建議等。請於最後一週（第16週）的週日午夜前，連同期末作業，一起傳電子檔給老師。 |
